Orange Buttermilk Rolls

Monday night I got to go to the Coldplay concert in DC with Amber and Brooke. It was amazing!! They did such a great job and had a lot of extra little details that made the concert amazing...like everyone wearing a wrist band that lit up to the beat of the music. My favorite performance was a tie between Viva La Vida and Yellow. By the time the concert was over I was exhausted and slept soundly the entire car ride home :)

This recipe was amazing and I couldn't get enough of these rolls. For some reason I absolutely love the taste of orange in bread.

Orange Buttermilk Rolls

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cups warm buttermilk (100° to 110°)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons applesauce
  • 4 teaspoons grated orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 cups white whole flour
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted (optional)

  • Directions:
  • 1. Combine first 3 ingredients in bowl of an electric mixer. Sprinkle yeast over milk mixture; let stand 5 minutes or until bubbly.
  • 2. Stir in 2 tablespoons applesauce, zest, and salt. Weigh or lightly spoon flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife.
  • 3. Add flour to yeast mixture; mix on low speed with a dough hook until a soft, elastic dough forms (about 5 minutes). Dough will be sticky. Place dough in a large bowl coated with cooking spray, turning to coat top. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • 4. Punch dough down; turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Cut dough into 13 equal pieces. Working with 1 piece at a time, roll dough into a ball by cupping your hand and pushing against dough and surface while rolling. Arrange dough balls 2 inches apart on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Brush lightly with remaining 1 tablespoon butter. Cover; let rise 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • 5. Bake at 375° for 20 minutes or until rolls are golden. Remove rolls from pan; cool slightly on a wire rack.
